Austroads will hold two practical webinars to introduce the most up-to-date international best practice guidance for pedestrian planning.
The online sessions will follow the release of the updated edition of the Austroads Guide to Traffic Management (AGTM), which incorporates earlier research and the most recent recommendations for a consistent approach to creating safer and more attractive walking environments.
Richard Delplace, Austroads Program Manager Network, oversaw the review of the AGTM: “Walking plays a key role in the transport system; however, walking rates in Australasia haven’t increased in the past ten years. The aim of our project was to consolidate the most current practical knowledge to help practicians design, build and manage high-performing pedestrian networks and thus encourage walking in our communities.
These webinars will equip road designers, planners and engineers with useful tools to measure walking activities and plan for pedestrian-friendly streets in our towns and cities, in line with worldwide-acknowledged standards.”
The presenters, Ann-Marie Head and Jeanette Ward from Abley Ltd, who were significantly involved in updating pedestrian guidance in the AGTM, will talk about the changes and cover some of the key topics to be considered when planning and designing for pedestrians.
“Walking is a healthy, sustainable, and equitable travel mode that also provides first mile/last mile access for many journeys. Our research highlights the need for safe, accessible and enjoyable walking facilities that enable liveable places,” said Ann-Marie Head, an Associate Director at Abley Ltd. “In the first webinar, we will focus on the diversity of people that influences planning and designing for walking, how to plan for walking, and the selection of appropriate methods and tools.”
The second webinar will explain the value of measuring walking activities. “Pedestrian activity is rarely measured; however, it is important we understand this so we can create places people enjoy and that communities value,” said Jeanette Ward, Technical Director at Abley Ltd. “Webinar participants will gain an understanding of why and how to measure pedestrian movement and use the collected data to plan for walking and improve existing walkways, crossing points and other pedestrian areas, and also some relevant review and audit processes.”
There is no charge but registration for the webinars is essential. If you can't make the live session, registration will allow us to send you a link to the recording.
