Australia is taking a significant step forward in digital transformation with the new Digital Trust Service (DTS) led by Austroads, marking an important step towards national and international harmonisation of mobile driver licence standards and verification.
The DTS will enable Australian jurisdictions to safely and securely verify mobile driver licences (mDLs) and other credentials in line with international best practice.
On 21 June 2024, states and territories, along with the Commonwealth, agreed to use international standards ISO 18013 and 23220 for digital credentials that require cross-border verification. The mDL will be the first application of these standards.
Austroads has been collaborating with jurisdictions to ensure states and territories are ISO-ready, aiming to launch new mobile driver licences in 2026.
This section provides an overview of the DTS, including its objectives and core capabilities. It also highlights the work that Austroads has accomplished to date.
