More approved training providers now offer courses in Australia and New Zealand for professionals responsible for the installation and maintenance of road safety barrier systems as part of the Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS).
ASHTAS aims to ensure everyone involved in the installation and maintenance of road safety barriers has the knowledge and skills required to deliver safe road infrastructure. ASHTAS provides a graduated pathway starting with entry-level safety and operational awareness, to generic and then specialised installation training.
The crucial role that ASHTAS plays is in ensuring a high level and nationally consistent training and accreditation, which equips individuals in this field with the knowledge and skills.
The ASHTAS Operative training is an entry-level course for anyone involved in the installation and maintenance of road safety barrier systems. On successful completion, the accredited operative is issued with an E-card accessed via their mobile phone.
The ASHTAS Installer suite comprises:
- Installer A training (following Operative training) – the individual completes installer theory and the generic elements in practice of road safety hardware installation.
- Installer B (following Installer A training) – the individual completes training for specific road safety barrier types and then as applicable additional proprietary-specific system training.
On successful completion, the installer is issued an E-logbook accessed by installers that enables the collection and assessment of evidence to maintain ASHTAS accreditation currency. The E-card is also updated to reflect the ASHTAS installer accreditation.
There are five approved and active training providers, as follows (in alphabetical order):
- Civiledge
- CTA – Create Train Achieve
- Roading Industry Support Services
- Safe System Solutions
- XStructe
All approved training providers are active in delivering the Operative training in both Australia and New Zealand. This is available through both in-person and online options to accommodate individuals' needs and schedules.
Roading Industry Support Services is active in delivering the Installer training suite in Australia and New Zealand. The Installer training suite comprises a two-day in-person course delivering Installer A and B training
We anticipate the other approved training providers will also progress to Installer suite training delivery.
Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) is the latest jurisdiction to announce ASHTAS mandating arrangements. MRWA have mandated ASHTAS from 1 July 2025.
Individuals involved in the installation and maintenance of road safety barriers are recommended to undertake available training and obtain ASHTAS accreditation. For information on adoption and transition statuses in New Zealand, as well as Australian states and territories, visit the ASHTAS webpage.
Operations, training and accreditation material for ASHTAS is developed and delivered by Lantra on behalf of Austroads and its members. Visit the Lantra website for details about approved training providers.
