This test method sets out the laboratory procedure for determining the total emissions released during heating of neat and polymer-modified bitumen.

This test method can be applied to any type of neat and polymer modified bitumen used for road paving applications.

This test method describes a procedure for measuring the total emissions released during heating of neat and polymer-modified bitumen at high temperature, hence simulating road paving operations. Emissions are captured utilising air sampling through sorbent tubes. Laboratory-generated fumes are produced from small samples of neat and polymer-modified bitumen. Volatile organic compounds (VOC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and total particulate matter (TPM) are extracted via solvent extraction from the sorbent and filter contents. The recovered solution is then analysed using a gas chromatography (GC) mass spectrometer (MS) to determine the total emissions.

This test method can also be downloaded as a Word document.
