Entries now open for the inaugural Austroads Guidance to Impact Award 2027.
Austroads, together with the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), has launched the inaugural Austroads Guidance to Impact Award 2027, celebrating local governments that have successfully applied Austroads guidance, tools and technical resources to address transport and infrastructure challenges and deliver benefits for their communities.
Open to Australian local governments, regional organisations of councils and joint council alliances, the award showcases projects that demonstrate measurable improvements in areas including road safety, transport planning, sustainability, infrastructure performance and community wellbeing.
The initiative highlights the important role local government plays in translating nationally developed guidance into practical action on the ground.
Dr Geoff Allan, Chief Executive of Austroads, said the award highlights how evidence-based resources can support better decision-making and deliver meaningful results for communities.
“The Austroads Guidance to Impact Award shines a spotlight on the innovation, leadership and practical problem-solving taking place across local government every day.
“We know councils are delivering important projects, often with limited resources. This award provides an opportunity to share those successes nationally and demonstrate the measurable benefits they are delivering for road users and communities.
“Importantly, the award is not simply about celebrating good projects. It is about sharing lessons, highlighting effective approaches and helping others learn from proven experience.”
The award is being delivered with ALGA, reflecting the shared commitment of both organisations to supporting safer, more sustainable and resilient transport and infrastructure outcomes across Australia.
ALGA President Mayor Matt Burnett welcomed the initiative and invited local governments across the country to submit an entry.
“Local governments play a vital role in delivering the roads and transport infrastructure that communities rely on every day, and this award provides a national platform to showcase the difference that work is making across Australia.
“ALGA is proud to support Austroads on this initiative and encourages submissions from local governments of all sizes that can demonstrate how Austroads resources have informed better decisions and delivered benefits for their communities.”
To be eligible, projects must demonstrate the application of current Austroads guidance, material or tools and show a measurable contribution to one or more of the following areas:
- Road safety
- Active travel, network and traffic planning
- Sustainability and climate resilience
- Infrastructure performance and innovation
- Community outcomes
Projects may be ongoing or completed and can include initiatives undertaken by individual councils or collaborative projects delivered through regional organisations of councils and joint council alliances.
Entrants will gain national exposure for their projects, help build industry knowledge, and support the adoption of successful approaches across Australia.
The winner will be invited to present their project through an Austroads webinar and at the ALGA National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress 2027. Winners and finalists will also be recognised at the ALGA National General Assembly 2027.
Entries close at 11.59 pm AEST on Sunday 28 February 2027.
