New interim procedures for compacting asphalt specimens

Tuesday, 20 April 2021

Austroads has released a new test method which describes interim procedures to be followed when compacting asphalt specimens using a gyratory compactor.

The test method is used to ensure samples of hot mix asphalt are compacted consistently in testing.

It was adapted from test methods AS/NZS 2891.2.2:2014 Method 2.2: Sample Preparation – Compaction of Asphalt Test Specimens Using a Gyratory Compactor and AASHTO T312-19 Preparing and Determining the Density of Asphalt Mixture Specimens by Means of the Superpave Gyratory Compactor.

Ross Guppy, Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager said that the test method is a temporary measure.

“We are in a period of transition moving from the current Australian and New Zealand gyratory compaction standard to the Superpave method of gyratory compaction.”

“The Austroads compliant compaction devices are no longer manufactured and the Superpave gyratory compactors have been identified as the best replacement.“

“Austroads is investing in research that will enable a smooth transition between devices. The project (APT6240), which will update the Guide to Pavement Technology Part 4B: Asphalt, is due for completion in 2023,” Ross said.

It is envisaged AS/NZS 2891.2.2 will be updated after the transition phase has been completed.
