An upcoming Austroads forum in Brisbane will bring together industry professionals, government representatives, and scholars to explore emerging strategies aimed at preventing road crashes caused by driver distraction. The event, scheduled for 16 July this year, will be held at the Transport and Main Roads offices in Brisbane.
Matin Nabavi, Senior Project Manager at Austroads, who has overseen recent driver distraction projects, emphasised that driver distraction has often been perceived as a behavioural issue.
“Driver distraction is often viewed as the driver's fault,” Matin said. “People immediately conjure up images of drivers looking at their mobile phones or making calls. This is only part of the story.”
The upcoming event will take a more holistic approach to addressing distraction-related crashes, focusing on strategies that go beyond traditional views of driver behavior.
“We aim to have a diverse group of attendees,” Matin explained. “We’ll have people from government, industry, and leading researchers in the field, all coming together to share their perspectives.”
A wide variety of approaches and insights will be presented during the event. Attendees will also have an option to submit an expression of interest to present on work they have done or are doing on distracted driving preventative measures.
