Bridges

The Westgate footbridge provides a new pedestrian and cyclist connection across four carriageways of State Highway 16 near the Westgate Shopping Centre in Auckland, NZ. The bridge is 3 m wide and consists of three separate structures; a 10 m long prestressed precast approach, a 100 m long straight through truss crossing the motorway with minimal structural depth and a 120 m long curved underslung truss meeting disabled access gradients to rise 8 m over the motorway. The paper presents the background to the project, the solution adopted and the key issues associated with the design and construction of the project.
