Boorloo Bridge (Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges Project) features the design and construction of two new signature cable stayed bridges for pedestrian and cycling traffic, crossing the Swan River in Perth via Heirisson Island, Western Australia. Boorloo Bridge has become a visible landmark for the region. The Causeway Link Alliance requested Freyssinet to develop, design and install a novel stay cable system that included architectural LED light units integrated in the stay cable duct.
Freyssinet have developed and installed stay cables on several bridges in Australia, however, the integration of an architectural and integrated lighting system imposed several new technical challenges for the project team. These challenges included changes to the conventional cross section profile of stay cables that were tested in a wind tunnel to confirm the aerodynamic properties and stability, development of a mock-up to confirm feasibility for maintenance and LED unit replacement methodology.
