The Old Pedler Creek Bridge, built in 1966 was one of the most significant bridges in South Australia, linking the South to the City of Adelaide. This 153m long steel girder bridge, with 24m tall piers, was decommissioned as part of the recent Main South Road Duplication Project but it had a number of upgrades over its history as the population in the South of Adelaide boomed.
The paper will focus on the technology used to improve and strengthen the bridge and asset management measures undertaken to address modern day demands for a growing Adelaide population. The paper also discusses the controls used to monitor the bridge during the construction of the new bridge adjacent as well as the decommissioning process.
