As traffic volumes grow across our road networks, asset owners are facing increasing challenges associated with ageing infrastructure and the demands of increasing vehicular loading. After the emergence of shear cracking on the Pennant Hills Road bridge in Sydney, a successful strengthening project consisting of the installation of steel web plates was undertaken to reinstate the full load carrying capacity for heavy load platform vehicles. Whilst the adopted solution was considered appropriate to address the issue at hand, it was the robust process to achieve this outcome which was the true success of this project. The project overcame numerous constraints by employing a robust risk management strategy and iterative validation processes. The successful outcome highlights the importance of adaptive design, collaboration, and the use of novel techniques in addressing infrastructure challenges.
