The Botany Rail Duplication project involved upgrading a 3km rail alignment over busy intersections, arterial motorways, and the primary access point to Sydney Airport. The project works included the removal and replacement of two existing bridges over separate weekend possessions, and the construction of a new 70-metre, skewed, two-span bridge adjacent to an existing bridge over a seven-lane motorway. This paper discusses the challenges and innovative techniques used in the project relating to removal of existing bridges, innovative launching method, complex girder movement and challenging site constraints.
