Australia’s local governments collectively manage over 24,000 bridges that are essential to community connectivity, economic activity, and public safety. Yet, these critical assets face significant challenges stemming from aging components, increasing loads, systemic under funding, and climate pressures. This paper presents an assessment of the state of local government bridge assets, drawing on the most recent findings from the National Local Roads Data System (NLRDS) and the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) 2024 National State of the Assets (NSoA) Report. It outlines key risks and opportunities while highlighting practical strategies for bridge owners to ensure these structures remain safe, resilient, and serviceable into the future.
