A newly constructed highway on the French island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, called the 'Nouvelle Route du Littoral' would cross the beach and part of the route on a viaduct in the water. To support its deck and allow for necessary movements, this structure needed a lot of high-capacity bearings. These 'high performance' pot bearings were all made to be able to be, adjusted in height as needed in response to settlements, ground movements, and other events by injecting a certain hardening compound. Every bearing has a pressure sensor installed as well, which makes it possible to determine the load it is carrying at any moment. This is an extremely helpful feature for inspections as it allows the safe and proper distribution of loads among the piers of the viaduct to be confirmed by the asset managers.
