This report showcases the practical application of various sources of end-of-life tyres converted into crumb rubber for asphalt road use. It is part of an Austroads project which aims to demonstrate the viability of incorporating crumb rubber derived from sources other than truck tyres into asphalt applications from an operational and constructability standpoint. This report follows an initial report that assessed the readiness of the tyre recycling and asphalt industries to handle crumb rubber from any sources of end-of-life tyres.

The demonstration project involved resurfacing a road in Tasmania with three different crumb rubber-modified asphalt mixes, each using rubber from a distinct source: truck, passenger car, and off-the-road tyres. Preliminary tests on the modified binder and asphalt showed no significant differences in performance. In addition, in-situ properties such as air void content and rutting were consistent across all three mixes.

The results suggest that more attention should be directed towards crumb rubber produced from non-truck tyres – some of which are minimally recycled, despite their significant volume.
