Guide to Road Design Part 2 provides a detailed description of the three critical aspects of road design: the design objectives that apply to a road design project; context-sensitive design; and the factors that influence the road design, including road design in the context of the Safe System philosophy.
Guidance is provided to practitioners on the range of influences, information, data, criteria and other considerations that may have to be assessed in developing a road project. The Guide also describes the basis of the guidelines and the context in which they should be applied. It also provides links to other Austroads Guides and the resources that give further guidance on design inputs.
This Guide has been obsoleted. The content of Part 2: Design Considerations was incorporated into Part 1: Objectives of Road Design in March 2021.
Changes to Edition 2. 1 include:
- Addition of Appendix A (previously Guide to Road Design Part 7:Geotechnical Investigation and Design published in 2008)
- Updates to Appendix A include:
- Section A1.3: Aims of a Geotechnical Investigation and Design:expands the information on the scope of a geotechnical investigation.
- Section A1.4: Safety During Investigations (new): Identifies some of theissues to be considered in undertaking an investigation.
- Section A2.1: Desktop Assessment: expansion of the sources ofinformation, including geotechnical databases.
- Section A2.2: Approvals for Site Investigations: expanded to include thepossible need for a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
- Section A4: Design Elements: throughout the section, greater referencehas been made to ground water considerations.
- Section A4.9: Observational Method (new): outline of a feedback loopto designers when actual site conditions are known.
