Austroads Technical Specification ATS 5230 sets out the requirements for the supply and installation of the following types of driven piles:
- prestressed concrete piles;
- reinforced concrete piles (unless the Contract documents prohibit the use of reinforced concrete piles);
- steel piles, including:
- universal columns and beams;
- tubular piles; and
- tubular piles with a reinforced concrete shaft (i.e., permanent driven cast in place pile);
- composite piles, comprising of a precast prestressed concrete upper segment spliced onto an H-section steel lower segment.
ATS 5230 applies to driven displacement piles where the geotechnical strength is primarily determined by the analysis of the driving behaviour. It does not cover the:
- design of the driven piles; or
- installation of displacement piles by screwing or jacking.
Unless specified otherwise in the Contract documents, the piles must be installed and tested in accordance with AS 2159, as amended by this Specification.
This technical specification can also be downloaded as a Word document.
Edition 1.0 was superseded by Edition 1.1 in April 2026.
