Implementing an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Guidance Service

Austroads has well progressed its national project to improve understanding and safe use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). As a key outcome of this work, Austroads has launched the ADAS Guidance Service, now available through the ADAS Assist website and via the free ADAS Assist app.

With more vehicles on Australian roads featuring ADAS technologies, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking, the way drivers interact with vehicles is changing. To support this shift, the project focused on developing clear, accessible information and practical tools for drivers, licensing authorities, and driver assessors.

Introducing the ADAS Guidance Service

As a central hub designed to build confidence in using vehicle technologies safely and effectively, the platform provides:

  • Fact sheets, FAQs, and explainer videos
  • Clear, consistent explanations of common ADAS features
  • Tailored resources for driver assessors and licensing authorities

Visit adasassist.com.au or download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to access the full suite of tools on your phone.

The initiative, SRL6414 – Implementing an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Guidance Service, built on previous Austroads research that identified the need for improved education, training, and licensing processes for ADAS-equipped vehicles.

The project set out to:

  • Develop an online platform offering consistent, brand-neutral information about ADAS
  • Create educational materials for a range of users, from everyday drivers to driver assessors
  • Raise public awareness of how ADAS technologies work, including their safety benefits and limitations
  • Establish processes for maintaining and updating ADAS-related content over time

This work was delivered in close collaboration with transport agencies and road safety experts across Australia and New Zealand.

The ADAS Guidance Service is now live, with the broader communications strategy rolling out through 2025.

This project builds on two guidance documents published by Austroads in 2022:

The Driver Testing Guideline: Outlines how ADAS features operate and their limitations. Supports driver assessors and licensing authorities in adapting test procedures for modern vehicles, while reinforcing that safe driving and awareness remain essential regardless of technology.

The Driver Education Guideline: Offers a brand-neutral overview of ADAS in Australian vehicles, explaining how features work, their benefits, and limitations. It also introduced a communications framework to guide how these messages are shared with the public.

These guidelines remain available as part of the broader ADAS education approach.
