Austroads will be hosting an international workshop on “Lifecycle Interventions to Lift Road Tunnel Sustainability”, in collaboration with PIARC, the World Road Association and Transport for New South Wales. The event will take place on Thursday, 26 September 2024, from 9 am to 5 pm AEST.
Sustainable infrastructure is designed, constructed and operated to optimise long term environmental, social and economic outcomes. But delivering that balance is challenging. Governments in Australia and New Zealand have committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Road tunnels require large amounts of materials to build and are energy intensive to operate, so reducing their embodied and operational emissions is crucial. This day-long session will share lessons from experts in tunnel design, construction and operations. Network with designers, project managers, engineers and operators from Australia and New Zealand along with the World Road Association’s Tunnels Committee members to discuss lifecycle interventions that have made a difference to tunnel sustainability. We’ll also specifically consider the role of super long urban tunnels and whether they can deliver sustainable outcomes for government and community.
