Webinar: Managing Over-height Vehicles in Tunnels

Over-height vehicle incidents continue to present safety, operational and asset protection risks in tunnel environments across Australia and New Zealand. Even when a vehicle is stopped before entering a tunnel, its safe removal can cause significant network disruption.

This webinar will present findings from the Austroads research report Managing Over-height Vehicles in Tunnels. It will examine how vehicles already on the road network and at risk of entering managed tunnels are addressed across the prevention, mitigation, response and recovery stages. The research draws on literature, stakeholder engagement, a review of selected Australian and New Zealand tunnels, and Australian, New Zealand and international case studies.

The session will highlight opportunities to improve early detection, driver communication, time and distance for safe diversion, system integration and coordinated incident response. It will also discuss improving incident data, assessing improvements to legacy tunnels and strengthening Austroads guidance.

The webinar is suited to road authorities, tunnel operators, transport practitioners, ITS specialists, freight representatives and incident response professionals.

Chris Adams Chris Adams is an Electrical Engineer and the Operations Supervisor for Ventia on the North East Link Project. He has previously led network operations for CityLink in Victoria and has extensive experience in systems assurance, operational technology, risk management and the integration of safety-critical infrastructure, helping bridge engineering design with real-world operations.

Shifani Sood is a Principal in WSP's Strategic Advisory team with over a decade of experience delivering transport and infrastructure projects across Australia and New Zealand. She led the development of this report and has worked on a number of other Austroads research and guidance projects spanning policy development, infrastructure resilience, sustainability, freight, active transport and future mobility.

Tom Betts is a Principal ITS Engineer with WSP and a Chartered Engineer with more than 12 years of experience delivering intelligent transport systems, traffic signals and smart motorway solutions across Australia and New Zealand. As the Technical Lead for this project, he leveraged his expertise in transport technology, systems engineering, operational concepts and over-height vehicle detection systems.
