This webinar will provide an overview of the updated Austroads Guide to Road Safety Part 3: Safe Speed Management, with a focus on how the guidance can support safer speed limit setting in practice.
Designed for road authorities, transport practitioners and others involved in speed management, the webinar will provide an overview of the Guide’s key concepts, evidence base and practical tools for applying safe speed principles across different road and street environments.
Participants will learn how the updated Guide supports a move from evidence to strategy, frameworks, implementation planning and delivery.
Key highlights of this Guide update include:
- Key principles for safe speed management
- A framework for identifying safe speed limits, embedding Movement and Place and Safe System
- New sections on managing system change – taking into account leadership, practitioners and the public
- An overview of different approaches to speed limit implementation

Anna Bray Sharpin is a Principal Transportation Advisor at Abley and the Technical Lead for the update of the Austroads Safe Speed Guide. Anna has over 15 years of experience working in transport and road safety. Anna led the development of New Zealand’s national Speed Management Guide (2022). She has also worked internationally, supporting road safety and speed management in low- and middle-income countries. She was the lead author of the Low Speed Zone Guide (World Bank and WRI, 2021). Anna has extensive experience delivering training and capacity-building workshops for road safety stakeholders in New Zealand and internationally.
