Fourth edition of Austroads’ Road Asset Data Standard provides revised priority data sets and machine-readable formats

Monday, 24 October 2022

Austroads has released the fourth edition of the Road Asset Data Standard (RADS), providing road agencies and their suppliers across Australia and New Zealand with a specification for the data that supports common operational activities. Machine-readable versions of RADS are now also available.

This new edition of the RADS is designed to be used by road asset owners, managers, service providers and road network funding agencies in the planning, delivery, operation, maintenance, disposal and reporting of asset management functions across the road asset portfolio.

Standardising the collection of road asset data will reduce data collection costs, improve decision making associated with road investment and expenditure, and facilitate the implementation of national reforms.

The updated version of the RADS includes minor revisions to the Priority Data Sets. Three machine-readable versions of the standard have been created using the following widely understood, platform-independent formats:

  • Comma Separated Value (CSV)
  • JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)
  • Extensible Markup Language (XML).

The RADS offers potential benefits to road industry stakeholders who use data for road research, funding approvals, developing policy, expenditure comparisons, national reporting, inter-organisation communications, supporting national reforms and shared services.
