The Medlow Bath Station Upgrade Project is part of an initiative to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure.
The station upgrade included the concept development, design and construction of a new pedestrian bridge across the widened Great Western Highway including associated lift, stair and ramp structures. The design of the pedestrian bridge was to respond appropriately to the significant heritage values of the Blue Mountains setting and the local precinct, be visually lightweight and avoid dominance of the context and nearby heritage items and comprise a continuous and seamless element, whilst being fully compliant with the applicable standards, specifications and requirements.
Working as a fully integrated team, constructor (Arenco), architect (DesignInc) and engineer (GHD) developed a solution that met the extensive heritage requirements and community expectations, achieved the project aim of creating a compliant, safe and accessible transport link, and overcame numerous construction challenges including a highly constrained site and extremely limited closure windows for the highway and rail line.
The pedestrian bridge comprises a curved, closed cell fabricated steel box girder superstructure, running adjacent to the Blue Mountains Railway, spanning the Great Western Highway and cantilevering out to the impressive vista of the Megalong Valley. The successful delivery of the project required exceptional engineering and construction effort and extensive collaboration from concept to construction.
