Practitioners have raised concerns when designing for heavy vehicles with respect to the combination of design values for side and longitudinal friction demand as well as design criteria for horizontal curves with adverse superelevation.

This report examines the current Austroads design criteria and guidance with respect to truck friction factors, taking into account how and when they arose and subsequently incorporated into the current guide.

The report provides:

  • A literature review of relevant technical reports, including industry feedback obtained in ATP-T293-15 and other Australian research and testing along with a broader literature review to expand and confirm knowledge of the subject.
  • Analysis of the combination of longitudinal and side friction demand for a range of operating conditions and tested for curves with positive superelevation and for curves with negative (adverse) superelevation.
  • Recommendations for future updates to the Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 3 and further research and assessment.
