International Collaboration

Austroads coordinates a range of international activities for its member organisations.

Vehicle Registration and Driver Licensing Global Summit

The Association of European Vehicle and Driver Registration Authorities (EReg), the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), Austroads, and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) participate in the Global Summit. The event is organised to share knowledge, address common challenges, and strategise solutions, including future cooperative efforts.

The most recent summit was held in Washington DC in March 2025. The outcomes are detailed in the Summit Communique.

World Road Association

Austroads primary international engagement is with the World Road Association. Austroads currently has full or corresponding representatives on 15 of the 17 World Road Association committees. The representatives provide regular progress reports and have a close working relationship with an Austroads task force or working group.

Austroads also has agreements in place with equivalent organisations in several other countries to keep abreast of emerging trends and to share knowledge and technical good practice.

Transportation Association of Canada

Austroads has an agreement with the Transportation Association of Canada(TAC).  TAC promotes the provision of safe, efficient, effective and environmentally and financially sustainable transportation services in Canada. The agreement provides for the exchange of information and possible cooperative and collaborative research on topics of mutual interest.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials

Austroads has an agreement with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), an association representing highway and transportation departments in the United States of America. This involves the exchange of information and research results and publications.

The Austroads national office maintains regular contact with AASHTO. Free copies of AASHTO publications are received under the agreement between the two organisations, which are forwarded to the ARRB library where they are made available to the staff of Austroads member organisations.

American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators

Austroads has an agreement with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). AAMVA is the equivalent organisation of AASHTO covering vehicle registration and driver licensing in the United States of America. The agreement provides for the sharing of information between the two organisations.

OECD and European Council of Ministers of Transport

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the European Council of Ministers of Transport Telecommunications and Energy,  work together on transport research through a Joint Transport Research Centre. Austroads, with the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, participate in the various research initiatives of the Research Centre, generally as corresponding members of projects teams. Reports are provided to the relevant Austroads Task Forces.
