New report explores accessibility in EV charging

Wednesday, 20 May 2026

Austroads has released new research examining how electric vehicle charging infrastructure can be made more accessible for people with disability. This report comes as EV uptake in Australia and New Zealand continues to grow.

The report, Enabling Accessible Electric Vehicle Charging, highlights that while EV charging networks are expanding rapidly, accessibility is not always consistently considered—particularly where infrastructure is retrofitted into existing road and parking environments. It brings together international best practice and local research, drawing on input from people with disabilities, industry and government stakeholders.

Jo Vanselow, head of the Vehicles and Technology Program at Austroads, said the research aims to support a more inclusive approach to EV charging as the sector evolves.

“This report brings together lived experience, industry input and international research to better understand the barriers some users may face when charging an electric vehicle,” Jo said.

The report maps the EV charging journey across six stages and identifies common challenges, such as physical access to charging equipment, usability of payment systems and site layout. It also outlines practical considerations to help improve accessibility and user experience.

While minimum accessibility standards now apply to some government-supported infrastructure, the report notes that approaches can vary across providers and locations, it is intended as a resource to inform planning, design and operation of charging infrastructure across different contexts.

“The guidance is designed to help stakeholders think about accessibility at each stage of the charging experience and consider opportunities to improve outcomes for a wider range of users,” Jo said.

The findings may also inform future updates to Austroads guidance and contribute to broader discussions on inclusive transport infrastructure as the transition to low and zero-emission vehicles continues.
